Procession with a Portable Shrine for the Sanno Festival in Edo

The very high-quality painting is a fragment of a multi-part set depicting famous places in Edo and its environs. It is related to the sixth lunar month, when around the mid-point of the month the Sanno Matsuri festival is celebrated. The peak of the festival is a procession called Jinkosai – a procession of figures in costumes depicting the famous history of Japan; at the head of the procession is a figure dressed in a costume of the goblin Tengu, with a long nose. Even today, the procession still sets out at 8 a.m. from the Hie-jinja Shrine and ends at the same place after dark.

The very high-quality painting is a fragment of a multi-part set depicting famous places in Edo and its environs. It is related to the third lunar month. At the centre of the painter’s interest is the Toyoshima shop in the city of Kamakura, with crowds of people in front waiting for the rice wine sake that is on sale there.
